ONE OF THE CACTUS CREW

Artist

Michael Maag, aka PΞNG1, is an Ohio-based multidisciplinary artist working across digital art, code, sculpture, electronics, print, and fabrication. He started messing with code and building for the web in the late 90s, and technology has been part of his creative process ever since. Over time, the screen became less of a destination and more of a starting point. His work moves back and forth between digital and physical, using whatever tools and materials make sense for the idea.

A lot of PΞNG1’s work comes from an interest in broken things: corrupted data, bad signals, glitches, old hardware, failing systems, and the unexpected results that happen when technology doesn’t behave the way it’s supposed to. He uses code, screens, electronics, 3D printing, paint, light, and physical objects to explore how technology changes the way we see, communicate, remember, and make things. There’s usually some tension between control and chaos, with room left for the system to push back.

Projects like STATIX, BRKRs, 1NF3KT3D, and Broadcast Wars are pieces of a much larger practice rather than the whole story. Some of the work lives onchain, some hangs on a wall, some takes up physical space, and some doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories. The common thread is a curiosity about our relationship with technology especially the weird, messy space where the digital world and the physical one start bleeding into each other.
